Aston Hall is a historic 17th century building located in Birmingham. The house was designed by John Thorpe for Sir Thomas Holte and its construction took seventeen years: begun in April 1618, it ended in the same month of 1635. Between 2006 and 2009 it has undergone a major restoration work and since 2012 it has become a museum open to the community.
Aston Hall is a real architectural jewel that has four hundred years of history behind it. Members of the royal family have also stayed there several times, King Charles I spent the night there and Queen Victoria has visited on more than one occasion. Aston Hall is also known for being one of the most haunted buildings in the country, and the stories about the ghostly women who inhabit it are known throughout the country.
Inside the museum, in the rooms, there is an exhibition with furniture, paintings, fabrics and metal works from the collections of the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. "Aston Hall by Candlelight" is also held every two years in the residence, an event where actors bring the festivities of the seventeenth century to life and the house is lit with hundreds of candles.
