The show

Giorgio Griffa in Biella from 21 May to 2 July 2023 with the exhibition “Sign and Drawing. The artistic language of Giorgio Griffa meets Biellese textile excellence” which opens on Saturday 20 May at 5.30 pm in the exhibition halls on the ground floor of the cloister of San Sebastiano.

Visible in museums such as the Tate Modern Gallery in London, the Museo del 900 in Milan, the Castello di Rivoli and the Dallas Museum of Art in the United States, Griffa's works are distinguished by the peculiar progression of primary signs, on canvases without frame and frame. Lines and signs that are configured as interventions each time different in thickness and color, on surfaces marked by the thin folds of the canvas, which form a grid of shadows and lights, the result of the encounter between the memories of the gesture and the sign. «I am convinced – explained Griffa – that painting has this memory that is so strong, so important, that the only gesture left for me to do is to put the brush, my hand, at the service of the painting».

Thanks to the workshops organized for the occasion, this free admission exhibition will also be very interesting for the youngest, to get to know an author who has been able to make his own the medium for which the area is famous throughout the world: the fabric. And thanks to the collaboration with Reda, a well-known Biellese textile excellence, which will supply parts of woolen pieces, the little ones will be able to try their hand at educational activities that will lead them to create their own work, taking inspiration from those on display.
