Museum in the Kulturbrauerei

The Museum in der Kulturbrauerei is a Berlin museum dedicated to the story of everyday life in the life of the GDR. The museum is located in the Prenzlauer Berg district and is housed in the stable of the Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery converted since 1991 for cultural and recreational use. Opened in 2013, the museum highlights the tension between the daily life of East Germans and the Socialist regime. The museum's collection consists of numerous documents, films and sound recordings, biographical accounts of daily life in the GDR, as well as reconstructions of places such as an original GDR newsstand, a Brandenburg pub, a drawing room or a grocery store. Through these reconstructions of everyday and private places, it is clear that the state has total control over every aspect of the life of its citizens, from consumption to information, and the inadequacy of the services and goods offered with respect to the needs of the population. The exhibition also features examples of people who have opposed the economy of scarcity through private initiative and creativity. A Trabi with a roof tent and a Dacia are exhibited as examples of the desire for escape of many East Germans who found a temporary outlet for the need for freedom on summer holidays in so-called friendly socialist countries, such as Lake Balaton, Hungary, where there are also many Western products that were not available in the GDR.
