The Mauermuseum - Haus am Checkpoint Charlie is a Berlin museum. It is a unique museum of its kind, dedicated to recounting and showing the climate and reality of the Cold War, including the ingenious escape attempts of the citizens of the former GDR to reach West Berlin. During the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between the two Germanys. The museum owes its origin to the organization of a temporary exhibition on the Berlin Wall in 1962, created by the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft 13. August", an association which takes its name from the date of the construction of the Berlin Wall and which deals with fighting against the violation of human rights as a result of the construction of the wall and to create activities such as conferences, publications and exhibitions. The exhibition was held in a small apartment on the famous Bernauer Strasse, one of the streets that the Wall had divided in two. In 1963 it was decided to open a permanent museum, located near the famous crossing point. The museum's collection includes objects and documents that testify to the Cold War period in Berlin. The famous "You are now leaving the American sector" sign became one of the most representative images of Berlin's political and territorial division. Today the sign is still displayed inside the museum. Over the years, the museum's collection was constantly expanded to fully document the historical and political events that divided the city, including the face-to-face of the Soviet and US tanks in 1961. The collection also devotes space to the curious solutions of escape devised over the years, from hot air balloons to motor vehicles with special hiding places, up to the single-seater submarine.
