Bridge Museum

The Brücke-Museum is a Berlin museum dedicated to the German avant-garde group "Die Brücke" (1905-1913). It is located in the Dahlem district. The museum building was built between 1966 and 1967 on a design by Werner Duettmann, in a functionalist style. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the "Die Brücke" group marked a break with German academic art, representing the beginning of German expressionism. In 1960, the founder of the movement, Karl Schmidt-Rottluf, donated his private collection which was permanently exhibited in the small Bauhaus-style building located in the Grunewald area. Today the collection has significantly expanded through donations and acquisitions and includes over 400 works including paintings, drawings, watercolors, graphic material, wood engravings, sculptures and archival material of the artists, thus representing the most complete collection of works and documentation on the style and creative function of this artistic movement. In addition to exhibiting works from the "Die Brücke", the museum also collects paintings after the dissolution of the movement.
