The Holburne Museum is a public art gallery in Bath, Somerset province, England. The building houses the collection of Sir William Holburne, mostly paintings and artists in the collection include Stubbs, Ramsay, Zoffnay, Gainsborough and Guardi.
The collection was assembled by Sir Thomas William Holburne (1793-1874) who throughout his life remained an eclectic art lover as evidenced by the same collection that includes pieces of all kinds: from Chinese porcelain, silver objects, bronzes, majolica paintings, portraits, old master paintings, books, coins, furniture, Roman glass, enamels and seals.
Sir Thomas William Holburne never married and lived with his sisters in Bath all his life. It was his express wish to leave the collection to the city so that everyone could enjoy it.
In 1882 the collection had 4,000 objects but over time it has continued to expand acquiring 2,500 further objects.
Significant acquisitions were ten paintings from Ernest E Cook's legacy (including works by Gainsborough, Stubbs and Turner); the portraits of the Sargent family from the mid-18th century.
