Diocesan Museum of Bari

The Diocesan Museum of Bari is located in the historic center of the city and is located near the Cathedral on the second floor of the Archbishop's Palace. The Museum was born in 1981 by the will of Monsignor Mariano Magrassi. The exhibition itinerary is divided into five sections: lapidary, art gallery, sacred vestments, the treasure and the Exultet scrolls. The room dedicated to sculptural finds reconstructs the architectural and decorative story of the Cathedral of Bari. The marble plutei, geometric decorations and architectural fragments bring the visitor back to the early Christian and Romanesque phase of the Cathedral. The picture gallery constitutes the richest nucleus of the collection. The collection is made up of works from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century from the Cathedral and other churches in the "Old Town". Of great value are the works of Veronese, Tintoretto, Paris Bordon, Corrado Giaquinto and Andrea Bordone. Characteristic are the paintings that reflect the Russian sacred iconography of the tsar period. The Treasury room is made up of several very precious liturgical artifacts. The oldest object is a Stauroteca in chiseled and embossed gilded silver. The tour ends with the Exultet room: four liturgical scrolls characteristic of the Beneventan Easter Liturgy.
