State Gallery in St. Catherine's Church

The Staatsgalerie in der Katharinenkirche is an art museum in the historic center of Augsburg. It was founded after 1806 and moved in 1835 to the Katharinenkirche of the former monastery of St. Catherine in Augsburg. It is the oldest branch of the Bavarian State Painting Collections (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen). It preserves one of the most important collections of ancient German painting in Bavaria. These are mainly the paintings of the Augusta school and the Swabian school of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, the "Great age of Augusta painting". The Gallery is located in the former Katharinenkirche, part of an old monastery, on Maximilianstrasse, in the heart of Augsburg's historic center. Access to the exhibition is via the Schaezlerpalais, which is right next door and which houses other art collections.

The collection includes numerous paintings from churches and panel paintings from the so-called "Augusta School" of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. A total of nearly 100 paintings are presented in four exhibition halls. In addition to the main works of the Augsburg Art Circle, you can see works from the nearby imperial cities of Ulm, Memmingen and Nördlingen. Some paintings come from the monasteries of Kaisheim, Wettenhausen and Mönchsdeggingen. The main attraction of the collection is probably the famous portrait of Jacob Fugger, which Albrecht Dürer painted around 1519. Furthermore, the works of Hans Holbein the Elder, Hans Burgkmair the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Elder can be considered key elements of the precious collection. .
