Roman Signer was born in Appenzell in 1938. Since the early seventies he has focused his artistic research on a new concept of sculpture, linked to processuality, transformation and movement. For his kinetic installations, actions and series of "experiments" he uses everyday objects, materials and natural phenomena, as well as provoking real explosions which he documents with videos and photographs. He has made public installations for the cities of Düsseldorf (Germany), Vaduz (Liechtenstein), Solothurn, Appenzell (Switzerland) and Nantes (France). He participated in Documenta 8 in 1987 and in Skulptur Projekte in 1997. In 1999 he represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale. Roman Signer lives and works in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
