This work is the only one in his collection, which the Marquis Manfredini had painted (he himself procured the walnut panel for the painter). The subject comes from Greek mythology: it refers to the hunting accident in which Cephalus kills his beloved Procris by mistake. While the unfortunate hero tries in vain to plug the wound caused by his spear, in the background Cupid mourns the end of a troubled love.
