It is a day of celebration in Perros-Guirec! Maurice Denis observes the hustle and bustle of the port. The boats are out for the regattas. Children play duck race and run away from the canvas, on the right. In the foreground, three women in costume: the artist used black surfaces to give them shape. In front of them, the mainmast, treated like a tree trunk, which crosses the canvas in its height. Its sinuous decoration responds to the arabesques on the surface of the water. These different elements testify to the influence of the art of Japanese prints in the painter's work.
Denis is part of the Nabi art movement. This current wants to free painting from realism and find in it a spiritual and sacred character.
