The Pietà, made from a single block of statuary marble, was completed in 2021 after 16 months of work. It was started in New York, defined with clay and plaster in Anagni (while Jago was in quarantine) and made in marble in Naples, here in the church of Sant'Aspreno ai Crociferi, where the block was welcomed by the entire community of the Rione Sanità and, before starting the sketch, covered with a multitude of signatures.
The sculptural group does not present itself as a simple re-proposal of the famous biblical episode, following inverted canons, but as a modern reinterpretation of a moment of contemplation and grief, in which humanity has identified itself for centuries.
The dramatic theme of awareness and loss is evident in the desolate face of the father, contrasting with the soft abandonment of the lifeless body of the adolescent in his arms, dropping a small stone (symbolic gesture for Jago).
Contrary to what one might think, the theme of the work is not religious in nature. The realization of the Pietà was influenced by a photograph taken during the war in Syria, captured by the photojournalist Manu Brabo.
