The Imbarcadero painted in 1782 represents a fantastic and theatrical reworking of various architectural elements: the ancient Port of Ripetta, the Pantheon and on the sides the Palazzo Nuovo del Campidoglio; it is a true "collage of Roman monuments", a speaking architecture, in which the painter returns and reworks the theme of a painting exhibited at the Salon in 1767. The Imbarcadero not only demonstrates Robert's architectural interest in antiquity, but also a pre-romantic sensitivity, where the daily actions of the characters, within these ideal settings, act as a counterpoint to the timelessness of the ancient world.
