The inscription on the blue background informs us that the English sovereign Henry VIII was forty-nine when Holbein portrayed him in this painting, made on the occasion of the king's fourth marriage. The frontal pose of the subject, the richness of the dress and jewels, the gaze fixed on the observer, return the vivid image of the greatness and power of Henry VIII, and allude to the strong political values of marriage, albeit of a very short duration, with Princess Anne of Cleves. Holbein, personal painter of the English sovereign since 1536, shows all his skill as an artist here. The different textures of the materials are rendered in an impeccable way: just compare the silk brocade and fur, the decorations of the dress, the puffs of the shirt, the sword and the jewels defined in detail. The physiognomy of Henry VIII is faithful to nature, but in the same way makes the image of the king timeless.
