Begun in August 1894 - The Portrait of countrymen (Portrait of Mrs. Battegazzore) follows that of her husband, completed by the Volpedese in the autumn of the previous year. Congruent in terms of the size of the support and the frontality of the subject, the two paintings are distinguished by a different resolution of the background, brown for both, which in the later canvas is enlivened by a brushstroke enriched with reddish hues, to reveal from those depths the mass of the face in bright light. Framed by the bush of raven hair vibrant with colored locks and by a parure of gold jewels, brilliant with notches of pure and full-bodied pigment that interrupt the monotony of the black dress, the beautiful expressive face, like that of her husband, is treated with extraordinary naturalism, perfectly corresponding to the two photographs by Pellizziana used by the artist as a further model to integrate the seats from life, which must have been very profitable given the excellent health of the client who can pose for several hours a day .
