Born in Piacenza in 1691, where he studied theatrical scenography, Pannini moved to Rome at a young age, dedicating himself to fresco decoration and the creation of extraordinary views of the Eternal City, without neglecting, according to a typically eighteenth-century taste, to imagine ideal landscapes populated by classical ruins. The canvas exhibited here, dating back to the fourth decade of the eighteenth century, is characterized by a careful scenic balance, with a seductive marble river deity at the center of the composition.
