The work is almost composed by juxtaposing "decoupage" clippings from Leonardo's works. The Child is a literal reprise of the one in The Virgin of the Rocks (preserved in the Louvre), while the head of Joseph recalls the drawing studies that Leonardo conducted on the human figure.
