Boucher's signature and date appear at the bottom of both paintings. They depict a glimpse of nature near Beauvais, where there was a tapestry factory run by the painter. The two works correspond to a happy period in the artist's career who in 1765 was named Premiere peintre du Roi, thanks to the protection of Madame de Pompadour, the king's official mistress and queen of taste of the French court, who took drawing lessons right from the painter. The two paintings, which express the desire for harmony between man and nature, show the influence on Boucher of Dutch painting and the distance from the classical ideal of the Italian landscape.
