The Baptism of Christ can be read in parallel with the other painting in the collection, the Adoration of the Shepherds, both made as sketches for a monumental work consisting of several canvases and intended for a Madrid church. El Greco took advantage of the vertical format to give an ascending impetus to the compositions: if for the depictions of Baptism it is quite common to set the scene on the vertical, to highlight the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus, this modality is, however, decidedly unusual. for the Adoration of the shepherds.
