Exhibited at the Promotrice in 1866, the painting was purchased by King Vittorio Emanuele II for the modern art gallery of Capodimonte; although the work was commissioned by the Swiss Fierz, he gladly accepted a copy. The painting is placed in the youth phase, a moment in which the artist ranged from the old posillipist system to the new colors and layouts of the Resin School. It already contains all the elements of mature production: the choice of a theme of symbolic content combined with a concrete vision of the landscape, the interest in typical and folkloristic motifs, the propensity for an aesthetic painting with light and bright colors.
