Description

The X tomb of Albate presents the richest grave goods of the whole necropolis and testifies to the honors paid to the high-ranking deceased in the Golasecchian society around the middle of the sixth century BC. It is a female burial, as the types of bronze, coral and glass ornaments indicate. The kit also includes a situla and the so-called duck vase. The situla, used to contain drinks during banquets, is used here as a cinerary urn, deprived of the handle, probably a symbolic reference to death that breaks the bonds to life. The artifact is in bronze foil and is embossed. The duck-shaped vase which, due to its particular shape and difficult practical use, is considered of ritual use. In Nordic mythology, the water bird is linked to the sun because it recalls the boat, with the bow and stern in the shape of a bird, which carries the star on its journey across the sky.
