The Mask was found, in 1906, in the precious funerary equipment of the Tomb of Kha and Merit. Made of cartonnage, a kind of papier-mâché made with linen strips soaked in plaster, gilded and decorated with hard stones and glass inserts, it had the task of protecting the face of the deceased and restoring her sight. The use of colors and gold allude to the divine status of Merit, who became, after death, an incorruptible spirit.
