Portrait of Antinous, a young Bithinius favorite of Emperor Hadrian, who died at a young age in 130 AD. and then deified. The work consists of an ancient fragment - recognizable in the bust and in the left and back of the head - integrated in the modern era. The physiognomic peculiarities of the young man are known from the numerous sculptures and coin images spread throughout the Roman Empire. In modern times the iconography of Antinous became known above all after the discovery in Villa Adriana in 1735 of a relief representing him, now preserved in the Albani collection. Starting from the intuition of the Egyptologist W. Raymond Johnson, in 2013 it was possible to identify the missing ancient part of the bust of Antinous from the Boncompagni Ludovisi collection with a marble fragment preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago.
