In his activity as a sculptor first and, therefore, as a painter, Modigliani has always expressed his passion for the figure without hesitation, never giving up portraying, throughout his short life, friends, poets, art dealers, occasional models. With exceptional ease and spontaneity he simultaneously translated the physiognomy of a face, the expression of the gaze, the state of mind, ignoring the laws of perspective and chiaroscuro. His gallery of portraits, never painted from memory but always with a model, has the immediacy and truth of a very personal diary, because the freedom of expression is always authentic and the fast execution, entrusted to the drawing, as subtle as in the tip of a pencil, but sharp and constructive.
