Air strike on Mariupol maternity clinic

Iryna Kalinina (32), a pregnant and injured woman, is carried from a maternity clinic damaged during a Russian airstrike in Mariupol, Ukraine March 9, 2022. Her newborn, named Miron (meaning 'peace') , was born stillborn and half an hour later Iryna was also deceased. An OSCE report concluded that the hospital was deliberately targeted by Russia, resulting in three deaths and seventeen injuries. The jury found the photo to be an attack on Ukraine's future.

The price of peace in Afghanistan

Following the withdrawal of US and allied forces from Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban returned to power. In response, other nations have stopped providing aid and have frozen billions of dollars of government reserves deposited abroad. The severe drought of 2022 made the economic crisis even worse; according to the UN, half of the country's population currently does not have enough food and over a million children suffer from serious malnutrition problems. This report captures the many difficulties that Afghan people face on a daily basis.

Mistreated waters

Four landlocked Central Asian countries are grappling with the climate crisis and the lack of coordination of the water resources they share. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, upstream of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers, need extra energy in winter. Downstream, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan need water in summer for agriculture. Historically, countries seasonally traded energy from fossil fuels for water released from upstream dams, but since the fall of the USSR and the rise of privatized industries, this system has gone out of balance. Unsustainable water use and the recent severe drought exacerbate the difficulties. Here, the doors don't know me

This digital project explores the effects of rising sea levels on the local community of Al Max, a fishing village located along the Mahmoudiyah Canal in Alexandria, Egypt. For generations, its inhabitants have lived and worked on the canal that leads to the Mediterranean Sea. In 2020, the Egyptian government began evicting them and relocating them to homes several kilometers away from the canals, not only demolishing the houses, but also endangering the collective memories and local culture rooted in Al Max. The stories described here speak of the precariousness of people everywhere who are struggling to make their voices heard in the midst of global economic and environmental upheaval.

Renewable energies, new technologies for food production and the circular economy can be seen as key trends among European companies seeking a green transition. According to OHCHR (Civilian Personnel Human Resources Office), human-induced climate change is the most serious threat to the natural environment and society that the world has ever faced. This prompted the European Union to set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and to reduce them to net zero by 2050. The photographer documented innovative technologies that offer possible paths towards these goals.

Alpaqueros

Vital to the livelihoods of many people in the Peruvian Andes, alpacas face new challenges due to the climate crisis. With natural rangelands shrinking and glaciers receding, these animals are increasingly struggling to graze and hydrate themselves. Communities of alpaqueros (alpaca herders) in turn may be forced to move to higher altitudes or abandon their way of life. To combat these difficulties, scientists hope to address the problem by creating breeds more resistant to extreme temperatures. The jury appreciated the way this report demonstrates how culture and identity are deeply intertwined with the environment.

A flooded forest in Mungindi, Australia on April 19, 2021. This area forms a natural basin, which can further isolate remote communities for weeks on end.

This series offers a unique perspective on the recent floods that devastated areas of New South Wales, Australia. In the production of infrared aerial images, the vegetation has pink and red tones, which contrast sharply with the blue and cyan of the water. These images serve to make the recently flooded areas easily distinguishable by rescuers engaged in recovery operations.

The dying river

Alfredo, Ubaldo and José take care of the beehives near Wenden in the Arizona desert, United States, on March 11, 2022. Due to a significant decrease in the flow of the Colorado River, caused by the absence of rains and the increasing demand for water upstream, these beekeepers are forced to supply water to the bees through special troughs. Heat and drought weaken bees, making them more susceptible to pathogens and parasites, and affect the plants they feed on.

Between 2019 and 2020, bee colonies – vital to crop pollination – decreased by 43.7% in the United States. The jury felt that this understated portrait invites reflection on an environmental issue with global resonance.

Before it fades

To fulfill their function as islands of biodiversity and barriers against desertification, oases depend on a delicate balance of three elements: abundant water supplies, good quality soil and date palms. In Morocco, devastating human activity and global warming are currently disrupting this ecosystem. About two-thirds of Morocco's oasis habitat has disappeared in the last century due to factors such as steadily rising temperatures, fires and water shortages. The degradation of the oases, in turn, produces an impact on the population, causing a decrease in agricultural production, poverty and migratory phenomena. The jury appreciated the project for the capillary study of a vanishing environment.

The Great Oblivion

Sugri Zenabu, a mangazia (female community leader) from the Gambaga 'witch camp', sits surrounded by some residents of Gambaga camp, Ghana, on October 27, 2022. Zenabu is showing some signs of confusion and memory loss associated with dementia. As life expectancy increases, dementia is increasingly becoming a public health and socio-cultural issue in Ghana and across Africa. Due to a lack of widespread awareness of the behaviors associated with this condition, women with symptoms of dementia are sometimes perceived as witches. In Ghana, they can be sent to live in so-called "witch camps".

Lee-Ann Olwage's personal project attempts to bring attention to often overlooked stories about dementia on the African continent. Published in Der Spiegel and made with support from the Bob and Diane Fund.
