Tropical Museum

The Tropenmuseum is an ethnographic museum in Amsterdam, dedicated to the culture, art and economy of the former Dutch colonies, namely Indonesia, Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean and other countries of the tropical and subtropical area.

The Tropenmuseum is housed in a complex built in 1926 to a design by MA and J. van Nieukerken and initially intended to house the Dutch Colonial Institute.

The museum's collection totals over 340,000 pieces. The museum presents eight permanent exhibitions, dedicated to African, Asian, Indian and South American culture, in addition to some temporary exhibitions. The most important permanent exhibitions are located on the ground floor and in the central hall.

The first floor of the museum is dedicated to the exhibition of objects of daily life of the populations of the Tropics, such as weapons and tribal objects.There are also realistic reconstructions of housing types, such as an Indonesian street, an Afghan hut and a typical market The second floor houses a section entitled "Man and the environment".

Among the most valuable pieces of the collection are the Pacific wooden boats, the mask collection, the ritual totems of New Guinea, etc. Attached to the museum, there is also the Kindermuseum, a space dedicated to children.
