The Church of San Francesco di Alessandria is one of the most important medieval monuments in Piedmont and represents one of the most significant testimonies of the city's history. Founded in the 13th century as the center of the Franciscan convent complex, it is now finally accessible to the public after a long and articulated recovery intervention that has restored its architectural and historical value. The project marks a new phase for this extraordinary place, destined to become the seat of the future Museum of the City of Alessandria.
For over two centuries, the church has changed its function, first transforming into a military barracks during the Napoleonic era and later into a hospital. The restoration works, started in recent decades and completed in 2026, have brought to light the original spaces, the Gothic architectures, and the artistic testimonies preserved within the complex, returning to the community a heritage of exceptional value.
The future museum headquarters will host the Museum of the City, with a path dedicated to archaeology, history, and the identity of Alessandria, integrating contemporary setups and multimedia tools in dialogue with one of the most fascinating buildings of the Piedmontese medieval heritage. The Church of San Francesco thus becomes a new cultural hub capable of combining the protection, research, and enhancement of the territory.
Visiting the Church of San Francesco means embarking on a journey through over seven centuries of history, among Gothic architectures, historical stratifications, and an important cultural regeneration project that returns to the city one of its symbolic places.
