The show

The Da Romano restaurant in Burano has been an artistic and cultural crossroads since the early decades of the twentieth century, frequented by important Italian and international personalities.

Names of the caliber of Jehudo Epstein, Giovanni Comisso, Aldo Palazzeschi, Orio Vergani, Riccardo Bacchelli, Emilio Vedova, Renato Guttuso, but also Arturo Martini, Oskar Kokoschka, Filippo de Pisis, Joan Mirò, gather around the figure of the host Romano Barbaro, Ernest Hemingway, Alberto Moravia. From Romano you can also find the Milanese world of the Circolo di via Bagutta and the restaurant of the same name, led by Mario Vellani Marchi, and among the illustrious guests there are Maria Callas, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina, Mario Monicelli.

In short, the Da Romano restaurant is one of the most important artistic forges in Italy and perhaps in Europe; a place that continues to attract personalities, artists and designers from all over the world. For many of them, the restaurant is above all a place to return to. In one of the many returns, Orio Vergani defines it as 'a goal worthy of us' and Giuseppe Novello, a prisoner in Russia, recalls the pleasantness of his beloved tavern, demonstrating the great capacity of Romano to welcome his guests and the warmth that the his restaurant gives off.

The three stars of Romano. Burano: art and history of a restaurant that has become a myth curated by Giandomenico Romanelli and Pascaline Vatin tells the hundred years of this 'special place'. The exhibition is set up in the spaces of the Querini Stampalia Foundation, which promotes it together with the Berengo Foundation, Berengo Studio and Lineadacqua and can be visited from 17 December 2021 to 6 March 2022.

The world of art is often identified with museums, galleries, public and private collections, but there is a season of modern art that has had a different profile: another 'world', dynamic and informal, in which artists have lived their social and community moment, where their works were appreciated and collected. It is here that unusual, more or less rich and exclusive collections were born, often becoming part of a tradition, which have marked a culture and have marked a city and a territory with unmistakable characteristics.

This type of collecting has had as patrons generous and fortunate, often of rare sensitivity, restaurateurs and hosts, known for their genius, foresighted choices and the ability to be protagonists without pride and presumption. Some of them are still active and dynamic in the Venetian panorama today.
