The show

Ante mare et terras is the first solo exhibition in Italy by TARWUK (Bruno Pogačnik Tremow and Ivana Vukšić, Croatian artists based in New York), and consists of four large sculptures and a series of drawings presented in the Pattern Room and a long wall at the entrance to the Maramotti Collection.

The Tužni Rudar sculpture (2018) was conceived by TARWUK as an initial work of the project and as the first phase of a process of metamorphosis that develops through the other three sculptures / scenic situations present in the exhibition.

The constant elaboration of the human figure - of its multiple possibilities of existence and of the fluid expressive quality of the body - represents the formal result of a sinking, of a profound research on identity and on the signs that memories and unconscious tensions imprint on bodies, physically modeling them. .

In the shape-shifting works of TARWUK, in balance between being and becoming, different levels and stratifications of times and materials coexist. The sculptures seem to originate from an archaeological and totemic past dense with fragments and relics which, filtered through a present reflection that is both subjective and universal, transforms them into tormented futuristic and potentially dystopian creatures.
