The show

I jump into the void. Art beyond matter is the third and final chapter of the multi-year exhibition project conceived by Lorenzo Giusti for the GAMeC of Bergamo, dedicated to the investigation of matter in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Launched in 2018 with the Black Hole exhibition. Art and materiality between Unformed and Invisible and continued in 2021 with Nothing is lost. Art and matter in transformation, Leap into the void closes the Trilogy of Matter by exploring the theme of dematerialization and creating a transversal story that highlights the connections existing between the investigations into the void - undertaken by the first movements of the historical avant-garde and developed by the experimental groups of the second post-war –, research on the flow dating back to the years of the first computerization and the use of new languages and simulated realities in the post-digital era.

JUMP INTO THE VACUUM

The exhibition, curated by Lorenzo Giusti and Domenico Quaranta, presents the works of some great protagonists of the history of 20th century art and pioneers of digital art together with authors of the most recent generations, thanks to loans from important institutions international and private collections.

Specifically, Leap into the Void turns its gaze to those male and female artists who, at different times, have investigated the dimension of the void, denying it in substance or identifying it as a mere ideal dimension, or whose work has proved capable of reflecting the epochal changes in the perception of the material dimension, introduced by the emergence of software and computerization paradigms, as well as by the digital revolution and its systematization.

The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections - Emptiness, Flow and Simulation - which frame as many ways of focusing, representing and expressing the principles of dematerialization, and unfolds in an experiential path that solicits the perception of the viewer from a point of view visual and bodily.

EMPTY

The first section is dedicated to the representation of the void as an immaterial space. A dimension forcibly denied, continually denied and fundamentally contradicted by the very materiality of the work of art. It welcomes a series of works by artists who, at different times, have worked, especially in painting, through the principles of extreme reduction, minimum contrast and the imperceptible, describing the void as an imaginative, ideal or conceptual dimension.

Distinguished by the dominant presence of white, in the first rooms the exhibition itinerary winds through the protrusions of Agostino Bonalumi and Enrico Castellani, the transparent plastic sheets perforated at regular intervals by Dadamaino, the minimalist compositions of Jean Degottex and Aiko Miyawaki up to the experiments with light and space by Ann Veronica Janssens.

The works of male and female artists of the early and late twentieth century are placed in dialogue with recent works by some of the most significant protagonists of international art in recent years.
