The show

Senigallia City of Photography presents the personal exhibition of photographer Roger Ballen , The Place of the Upside Down curated by Massimo Minini, in the double headquarters of Palazzo del Duca and Palazzetto Baviera, promoted by the Marche Region and the Municipality of Senigallia, in collaboration with the Massimo Minini Gallery and the Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi Foundation.

The exhibition is produced by the Municipality of Senigallia as part of the “Senigallia City of Photography”, a project that stands out for the creation of high-level original exhibition events dedicated to photographic art. Roger Ballen's exhibition will be the only one in Italy this year in a public museum in addition to his participation in the LIX Biennale in Venice where he will represent South Africa in his own national pavilion.

The Senigallia exhibition presents at Palazzo del Duca a nucleus of works from the collection of Massimo Minini, one of the Italian gallery owners who most represents Italy in the world: over sixty black and white shots that span Ballen's entire career are exhibited , belonging to his most famous series such as Outland (2000), Shadow Chamber (2005), Boarding House (2009) and Asylum of the Birds (2014).

Roger Ballen is one of the most original and influential photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries, born in New York, active for over forty years in South Africa, his chosen homeland. His works are alienating and extreme, at times absurd and dreamlike; they portray unlikely yet perfectly real places and situations, just as happens when you dream. They are works that investigate the human condition and the depths of the subconscious, inviting the viewer to ask himself questions about what he is looking at and consequently to ask himself questions as well.
