The show

In parallel to the exhibition An infinite beauty. The landscape in Italy from romantic painting to contemporary art curated by Virginia Bertone, Guido Curto, Riccardo Passoni in progress at the Reggia di Venaria, the GAM sets up the exhibition Natura e Verità 1861-1871 in the Wunderkammer space, which focuses on more daring researches conducted on the landscape front between Piedmont and Liguria, the so-called “School of the Future”, the nickname with which the critics branded the circle of admirers and pupils of Antonio Fontanesi. Next to the master from Reggio, protagonist with a masterpiece like Novembre and other paintings painted in Florence in 1867, is the cenacle of Rivara: from Carlo Pittara Federico Pastoris, from Alfredo de Andrade to Ernesto Bertea to Ernesto Rayper. The rendering of light and the use of bright colors, the adoption of unconventional compositional cuts and the freedom of the pictorial drafting constitute choices that bring the exhibited works closer together: in these subjects, which aroused scandals and controversies, reverberate the lesson of Fontanesi and the consonance with the research that in those years, under the pressure of realism, renewed the European art scene. The exhibition-dossier set up in the Wunderkammer of the GAM focuses on the plot of the relationships that linked Fontanesi to those younger artists who concentrated part of their activity between Piedmont and Liguria and who made the landscape a choice, a privileged field of their artistic work .
