The show

It is an exhibition full of visionary universes and eclectic personalities that is staged from 20 November 2021 to 28 February 2022 at the Visconteo Castle in Pavia, entitled “Marginalia. The forms of freedom ".

The exhibition, curated by Valerio Dehò, presents over thirty works - including canvases, large works on paper and installations - by thirteen contemporary Italian and international artists, who have brought their own personality into the art world without compromise, sometimes clashing with the art system in order to be able to express itself in total freedom.

The protagonists of the exhibition, organized by the Municipality of Pavia with the patronage of the Lombardy Region, are Silvia Argiolas, Francesco Bocchini, Claudio Costa, Severine Gambier, Gilberto Giovagnoli, Giuliano Guatta, Yayoi Kusama, MadMeg, Aldo Mondino, Mattia Moreni, Carol Rama, Nicola Troilo and Carlo Zinelli, artists who have worked outside the mainstream to affirm their expressiveness with radicality and who return the experience of a free art, just as free are their personalities.

The same exhibition itinerary was conceived by Arch. Rosanna Palomba to respect the strong individualities present in the exhibition and to accompany the visitor in a profound understanding of their work.

It is therefore a chosen marginality and not suffered the one that goes on show in Pavia: as in the case of Carol Rama, intolerant to every rule and provocative by nature, she has never respected the dictates of the art world that has instead often had to adapt to his. The artist is present in the exhibition with some works that, due to the diversity of materials, techniques and subjects, fully describe his strong, direct and liberating poetics.

Equally irreverent the work of Mattia Moreni: he too refractory to rules and schools, he was born with a malformation for which he had to paint his entire life with his left hand. His Self-portraits - one of which can be admired on display together with two other works - are violent graffiti that seem to have been removed from inappropriate places of art.

A marginality that expresses itself as a clear rejection of the art system comes from MadMeg (name derived from the painting "Margherita la Pazza" by Brueghel the Elder) and Severine Gambier, who have always been involved in counterculture and social battles linked to feminism: for their being on the edge means staying away from the center, where by "center" we mean the market, with galleries, collectors, auction houses and the museums themselves.
