The show

The Museo del Novecento in Milan dedicates an accurate and precise focus to Luigi Veronesi and his interdisciplinary approach, investigating the relationship between art, music, theater and cinema. “ Luigi Veronesi. Histoire du Soldat ", curated by Danka Giacon and Giulia Valcamonica, exhibits in the Focus -1 Space, from 10 May to 4 September 2022 , the nucleus of works purchased by the Ministry of Culture for the collections of the Lombardy Museums Regional Directorate and deposited at the Museum of the twentieth century .

The six sketches , made in 1939 with tempera and ink on cardboard, represent the stage costumes designed by the artist for the protagonists of the work of "Histoire du Soldat" by Igor 'Fëdorovicˇ Stravinskij, declined in the different scenes: the Soldier, the Devil in different shapes and the Princess, flanked by the project of a scenography. The work, written in 1918 and inspired by Russian fairy tales, soon began to circulate in avant-garde environments, such as the brilliant representation in August 1923 at the Bauhaus school and remembered by the artists who attended it: in this climate so rich in influences , in 1938 the encounter between Veronesi and the music of Stravinskij takes place.

From the sketches, Veronesi elaborates the puppet project in the same years in which he actively collaborates with the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In 1982 he staged the show in collaboration with the Colla company at the Piccola Scala.

The story is completed by the projection of the experimental film made by Luigi Veronesi the "Film n. 4", where the music of the "Histoire du Soldat" is accompanied by a series of abstract color images that follow one another according to the Fibonacci sequence module. . The film, which escaped the losses of other films produced by the artist before the Second World War, is now kept at the Fondazione Cineteca di Milano, which oversaw its restoration.

"Histoire du Soldat" has come back to life thanks to the granting of archival materials from the Teatro alla Scala, the APICE Archive, the Colla Theater and the collaboration with the Fondazione Cineteca di Milano and the support of the Veronesi Committee and the IULM University.
