The show

The Municipality of Brescia and the Brescia Musei Foundation, chaired by Francesca Bazoli and directed by Stefano Karadjov, present for the first time in Italy a new exhibition project by the Chinese dissident artist , resident in Australia, Badiucao (Shanghai, China, 1986): the exhibition CHINA (NOT) NEAR. Badiucao - works by a dissident artist , curated by Elettra Stamboulis, will be held from 13 November 2021 to 13 February 2022 in the exhibition spaces of the Museum of Santa Giulia in Brescia.

The exhibition is the main exhibition event of the Peace Festival, organized by the Municipality and the Province of Brescia from 12 to 26 November 2021. The event, now in its fourth edition, now boasts the patronage of the European Parliament and Amnesty International. The exhibition "CHINA (NOT) NEAR. Badiucao - works by a dissident artist" is the first solo show dedicated to Badiucao , the pseudonym of the Chinese artist-activist known for his protest art , currently working in exile in Australia . The exhibition itinerary retraces Badiucao's artistic activity, from the beginnings to the most recent works that were born in response to the health crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Badiucao, often known as the Chinese bank, has established himself on the international stage thanks to social media , with which he spreads his art all over the world - his twitter account @badiucao is followed by more than 80 thousand people -, and constantly challenges the Chinese government and censorship . His artistic-political vocation was born in 2007, when, as a law student at Shanghai University, he saw the documentary The Gate of Heavenly Peace, a clandestine film directed by Carma Hinton and Richard Gordon about the Tiananmen Square protests. The artist develops a firm decision to speak out on the front line against any form of ideological and moral control exercised by political power, in favor of the transmission of a non-plagiarized historical memory. His political commitment is realized, in fact, in the creation of participatory campaigns, billboards in public places, illustrations and online activities, often built with a visual language that ironically evokes the pop spirit of communist propaganda , tracing its graphic style, colors and tones. .

Thanks to his blog, social media and organized communication campaigns, Badiucao from Australia has carried on his resistance activity, becoming the only channel not filtered by government control capable of broadcasting the stories of Wuhan citizens during the lockdown of the 2020.

To facilitate the last visits to Badiucao, changes have been made to the opening hours of the exhibition: Saturday 12 and Sunday 13, from 10:00 to 22:00 Monday 14 extraordinary opening of the exhibition from 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday 15, from 10:00 to 22:00 From Wednesday 16 to Friday 18, from 10:00 to 18:00
