The show

The MIC - International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza is dedicating a major exhibition from 26 November 2022 to 14 May 2023 to Galileo Chini , a multifaceted artist among the pioneers of Art Nouveau in Italy and refiner of the déco taste developed over the twenty years.

The exhibition entitled “Galileo Chini. Ceramics between Liberty and Déco", curated by Claudia Casali and Valerio Terraroli, exhibits about two hundred pieces including ceramics (including unpublished ones) and preparatory drawings to document the various phases of activity of the two factories founded by Galileo Chini: "L'Arte della Ceramica ”, established in Florence in 1896 and the “Fornaci San Lorenzo” opened in 1906 in Borgo San Lorenzo, in Mugello, near Florence, of which Galileo was the artistic director. The ceramics of the Manufacture gained fame for their refined decorations initially inspired by floral motifs in the Liberty style and by female figures influenced by Botticelli, later characterized by the covering with metallic luster, decorative synthesis and a varied range of stoneware.

Chini was a multifaceted artist, very up to date on European tastes and trends of the time. He painted still lifes, beautiful landscapes of his Versilia, frescoed the dome of the vestibule of the Central Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 1909. He passionately dedicates himself to the art of ceramics with a very personal production and undertakes colossal enterprises of ceramics applied to architecture such as in the spas of Salsomaggiore, which in 2023 marks the centenary of its foundation.

The exhibition is hand in glove with the MIC and its origins. Galileo Chini was called to decorate the rooms dedicated to the arts of the Torricelliana Exhibition in Faenza in 1908, from which the foundation of the International Museum of Ceramics began. A first nucleus of works was donated by himself to the city of Faenza, for the museum being established. Unfortunately these were lost during the Second World War, but many others were donated by the Chini Manufacture in the following years.
