closed Eusebius and his Gospels.

The show

In 2021, the 1650th anniversary of the death of Eusebio, proto-bishop of Vercelli, patron saint of Piedmont, a man of authentic faith and great charisma occurs. From him and from the monastery created in Vercelli in the second half of the fourth century, a history spanning over a thousand years originated, which made the city and its territory a religious, political, cultural and artistic point of reference.

As part of the celebrations promoted by the Archdiocese of Vercelli and the Metropolitan Chapter of the Cathedral, the Foundation Museum of the Treasure of the Cathedral and the Capitular Archive participates in the anniversary with a temporary exhibition entitled Eusebio and his Gospels. The origins of a library. Pending programming according to the evolution of the health emergency, the exhibition will allow the public to see the manuscript from which the Vercellese Capitular Library originates: the Codex Vercellensis Evangeliorum, known as Code A.

Traditionally attributed to Sant'Eusebio, dated to the middle of the 4th century, it is one of the first translations of the Gospels into Latin. Its importance for the Vercelli Church goes far beyond that of the text of the primitive Church, becoming the tangible proof of Eusebius, of his life, of his work, of the meaning it had for Vercelli and his Church.

On display there will also be some manuscripts that will offer a cross-section of the Capitular Library at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a rereading of some works from the Museo del Tesoro del Duomo will be given, according to their Eusebian testimony.

The exhibition is realized thanks to the support of the Archdiocese of Vercelli and the CRV Foundation, in a network with MUVV - Musei di Vercelli and Varallo.
