The show

The exhibition Expressions. The proposition presents the works of over fifty artists from different historical periods, coming from various parts of the world. Artists share an interest in particularly expressive, or even expressionist, forms of art.

The artists range from exasperated individualism to manifestations of romantic melancholy up to deformed interpretations of the body and everyday life, as if to signify the need to verify one's own vitality in the face of the world's difficulties. The exhibition itinerary, which winds on the first and third floors of the Castello building as well as in the Manica Lunga, activates unprecedented relationships between the works, emphasizing the multiple ways in which artists express their emotional and bodily states. On display are paintings, sculptures, videos, performances, sound works, installations, up to projects based on virtual reality technology.

Among the historical works included in Espressioni. The proposition depicting Christ crucified between Pope Urban V and St. James, c. 1395-1399, by Simone dei Crocifissi (Cerruti Collection); Allegorical scene, c. 1521-1522, by the Mannerist painter Dosso Dossi (Giorgio Cini Foundation, Venice); Narciso, 1597-1599, by Caravaggio (National Galleries of Ancient Art, Rome); The Penitent Magdalene, c. 1645, by the Baroque painter Andrea Vaccaro and Sansone and Dalila, c. 1630-1638, by Artemisia Gentileschi (Gallerie d'Italia, Naples); the San Lorenzo, c. 1640-1649, by Jusepe de Ribera; the complete 1863 edition of Francisco Goya y Lucientes' Desastres de la Guerra; La Pazza, 1905 by Giacomo Balla (National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome) and the Portrait of Viktor Ritter von Bauer, 1917, by Egon Schiele (Cerruti Collection).
