The show

On Friday November 25th at 6 pm ( until April 9th 2023 ) the Pino Pascali Foundation presents an exhibition by Edward Burtynsky , famous photographer of industrial landscapes, contemporary artist among the most appreciated internationally for his civil commitment in witnessing the impact of man on the planet.

The exhibition, entitled Edward Burtynsky: Xylella Studies, documents the ecological disaster that has struck olive trees in Puglia and is the result of the work started with the Sylva Foundation, a non-profit organization that deals with environmental regeneration through reforestation activities. A year ago the Foundation, which was born in 2021 precisely with the aim of regenerating the Apulian landscape, hosted the Canadian photographer author of Anthropocene in residence in Salento, entrusting him with the task of translating the destruction of the millennial arboreal heritage into images and videos of the Apulian landscape caused by the xylella bacterium.

The synthesis of that work translates today into this exhibition, which the Pino Pascali Foundation has produced. The twelve images chosen, printed and created for this event will be on display in the halls of the Museum in a path of great emotional involvement.

Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterial plant pathogen transmitted by insect vectors and associated with serious disease. The Xylella epidemic was discovered on Apulian olive trees in October 2013, configuring itself as the first report of the bacterium in Europe. Since then, its presence has also been announced in France, Spain, Portugal and Germany. In 2015, the disease had already infected one million olive trees in Puglia. The most affected species are the secular ones of the local Cellina di Nardò and Ogliarola salentina cultivars.

With these premises Burtynsky, born in 1955 in St. Catharines (Ontario), from a family originally from Ukraine, recounted one of the most painful environmental disasters of recent decades, which started from Puglia and is now afflicting Italy and Europe to the detriment of an entire ecosystem.

The opening of the exhibition will be in the presence of the author. It is the second time that Edward Burtynsky has come to Italy to witness the devastation of the territories. His first Italian work documented the quarrying of Carrara marble in the Apuan Alps in the 1990s.

The evening will be introduced by Evelyn De Simone, director of the Lecce branch of the Sylva Foundation. The artist will tell the stages of his journey through the expanses of dead olive trees and his commitment to the regeneration of the area, in collaboration with Sylva. The meeting will be preceded by the projection of the video shot during his residence in the Xylella territories.
