The show

The Torino Musei Foundation in collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano and with the patronage of the Archdiocese of Turin, from 16 June to 29 August 2022 , presents the table by Ugo da Carpi for the altar of the Holy Face in the Vatican Basilica (1524-1525).

The work is exhibited to the general public thanks to the support of Reale Mutua and the technical contribution of Targetti Sankey Spa through lighting technologies with diversified lighting for a combined visual narration.

In the prestigious exhibition space of Palazzo Madama , visitors will be able to admire the altarpiece by Ugo da Carpi with Veronica unfolding the veil of the Holy Face between the Apostles Peter and Paul - a work of extraordinary importance for art and faith. It is a table "made without a brush", as it is written by the author next to the signature and as reported by Giorgio Vasari who saw it in St. Peter's together with Michelangelo.

Ugo da Carpi 's “carver” was a daring, ingenious and unprecedented experiment that no one later dared to repeat; a unique work of its kind because it is done not with the art of painting, but with the technique of overlapping matrix printing.

The table is exhibited to the public to share, in addition to a work of formidable technical and artistic interest, the results of an articulated and complex study, which, thanks to the work of professional figures of the highest profile and scrupulous research, have made it possible to reveal the story and the technique of execution of the work that is about to turn five hundred years of age. A life between two Jubilees: that of 1525 during the pontificate of Clement VII and the now next Holy Year of 2025.
