Bird Flight takes its title from a series of pictorial works created by the Austrian artist Erika Giovanna Klien (1900-1957), in which the flight of birds is expressed through movement and light, central themes of her artistic practice. Neglected by the history of art like many other artists of the twentieth century, part of the other half of the avant-garde theorized by Lea Vergine in the eighties, Klein was one of the most interesting exponents of the Kinetic movement, founded in Vienna by Franz Cizek after the Great War.

The kineticism of the origins develops around an education in art capable of freeing the individual energies of and of young people from the encrustations of tradition: it is a humanistic avant-garde, which connects dynamism with sensorial and psychic movement, renouncing the aggressive myth of speed and movement embodied instead by Futurism.

“The word Avant-garde comes directly from military and war jargon - underlines Bart van der Heide - and defines the permanent need for radical change and renewal characteristic of Modernism. However, change does not always and necessarily have to happen in a violent way. The thought of Erika Giovanna Klien and the Cinetisti paves the way for an alternative conception of change that does not take place at the expense of others. Radical in their own way, the CInetists nevertheless assert that change comes from within and that it is based on the fundamental effect of human experience. "

The utopias associated with the theme of flight converge in the exhibition with two pillars of modern and contemporary art - movement and light - both at the center of Klien's visionary artistic practice, of which the exhibition does not limit itself to narrating and exhibiting the work . In fact, Bird Flight puts the Austrian artist's works in dialogue with some light and kinetic works from the Museion collection, including four early works by Klien, with the aim of making his personal contribution to the Avant-garde visible, making its actuality and influence on subsequent generations. Alongside loans from the collections of Belvedere Wien, the Vienna University of Applied Arts, the Wien Museum and the Eccel Kreuzer Museum in Bolzano, Bird Flight exhibits works from the 1920s by Max Oppenheimer, Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack, Elisabeth Karlinsky and Fortunato Depero , from the 1960s by Dadamaino, Mark Adrian, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker and Alberto Biasi, and works by Eva Schlegel, Spencer Finch, Ceal Floyer, Benjamin Tomasi and Liliana Moro made from the late 1990s.
