The show

The Royal Museums celebrate the 161st Anniversary of the Unification of Italy by retracing the paths of history that unite Turin, the first capital, to Rome. From March 17 to July 17, the Dining Room of the Royal Palace hosts an unprecedented exhibition centered on the sumptuous silver tableware made in Paris for King Carlo Alberto by Charles-Nicolas Odiot . Commissioned in 1833 and transferred to the Quirinale between 1873 and 1874, it now includes 1832 elements and is one of the major commissions of the European courts of the time.

The service, admired for its excellent quality at the Expositions des Produits de l'Industrie in Paris in 1834, marks the evolution of the decorative models of jewelery towards an eclecticism of English taste, with rounded shapes that adapted to the needs of the nascent industrial mechanization.

164 specimens on temporary loan from the Quirinal Palace are exhibited, including a large oval soup tureen, legumiere, casseroles à entremets , gravy bowls, cruets, salt and mustard jars, mustard spoons, coasters, cutlery for twelve people, serving plates, cloches , trays, sugar bowls, coffee pots, milk jugs, teapots and a fontaine à eau chaude with its stove.

Charles-Nicolas Odiot was the son of Jean-Baptiste Claude, who led a thriving goldsmith's shop which, between the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century, supplied goldsmith's masterpieces for the French aristocracy and which included Napoleon among its clients. Bonaparte. The history and identity of the service have been reconstructed thanks to the research of Bertrand de Royere, who also traced the preparatory drawings of the famous Parisian maison , unfortunately lost in recent auctions.

The mise en table of the Royal Palace of Turin is embellished with crystals and porcelain from the collections of the Royal Museums and presents a scenographic setting created in collaboration with the Teatro Regio Foundation of Turin . At the sides of the table, four mannequins with male and female evening dresses from the late nineteenth - early twentieth century, set up by the scenographer Claudia Boasso.
