The show

A project to investigate the Queer dimension through new artistic languages, promote the expressive freedom of gender identity and sexual orientation and enhance the creativity of artists * belonging to the LGBTQIA + community. Palazzo Merulana, in synergy with the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation and CoopCulture, is proud to present “ UltraQueer - artistic metagender expressions ”, curated by Twm Factory , in collaboration with the Mario Mieli Homosexual Culture Club, Roma Pride and Inclusive Medicine.

The project, whose main objective is to investigate the queer dimension through the new artistic languages of contemporaneity, was born from the strong and felt need to give body and voice to the LGBTQIA + community within a regulatory context such as the institutional one of a place of culture. . It represents a step forward of great momentum, a path towards the recognition of protagonists *, stories and expressive forms still submerged, for the first time, in such an organic and scientifically supported way, in Rome and in Italy in a museum.

For Palazzo Merulana , therefore, it is a sign of great civil responsibility towards an extremely varied public that participates in contemporary cultural dynamics and policies and a commitment to the current debate on the arts. Among the main objectives, of course, the exhibition aims to promote the freedom of expression of gender identity and sexual orientation and to enhance the creativity of artists * belonging to the community.

It also intends to question the oppressive principles of the heteropatriarchal binary system, while encouraging in contrast the freedom of gender expression intrinsic to queer thinking. An inclusive and multidisciplinary project in which a selection of works by young artists * belonging to the LGBTQIA + community will be exhibited, representing queerness as an open network of sexual possibilities and polymorphism; the historical legacy of the homosexual liberation movement in Rome will also be explored, thanks to the resources of the Mario Mieli Circle archive. An editorial publication will be the corollary to carry forward the message of the exhibition. A series of meetings and a series of questionnaires will promote identity self-reflection and raise awareness of homotransphobic and intersectional discrimination. With this project, and its partners, we intend to build a network of social realities that promote inclusiveness and freedom of expression for everyone *.
