Catacombs of Naples

The Catacombs of Naples are located in the historic Sanità district.

The Catacombs of Naples are considered the second most important for archeology and art, after those of Rome. The Catacombs are underground cemeteries where Christian communities hid and were buried in Roman times. The Neapolitan Catacombs extend for a few miles underground and are carved into the tuff rock. In some areas there are the original frescoes with the depictions of the saints (San Gennaro, Sant'Eufebio and San Gaudioso).

Many of the Catacombs are inaccessible or poorly valued and preserved. Among the best preserved we certainly mention San Gaudioso and San Gennaro for architectural integrity and for the conservation of the frescoes. The entrance of the latter is allowed directly from the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità. The Catacombs of Naples present successive burials dating back to the seventeenth century. Particular are the frescoes with skulls and bodies frescoed with clothes and tools that depicted the social position of the deceased. The frescoes that are preserved here were made by the painter Giovanni Balducci , now buried inside the Catacombs of San Gaudioso.
