The show

From 10 February to 1 May 2022 at the Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte The Triumph of Death , 2019, the monumental canvas by the artist Cecily Brown is one of the greatest works she has created. An extraordinary painting executed after a trip to Sicily that the artist made in the spring of 2019 when he visited the well-known fresco " The Triumph of Death " from the mid-1400s located at the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo .

The Cecily Brown exhibition in Naples is curated by Sergio Risaliti and created by the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in collaboration with the London-based Thomas Dane Gallery and its Neapolitan headquarters. Also on display is a series of drawings made by the artist after completing the painting. In both its original and the artist's reworked version, The Triumph of Death features Death as an apocalyptic knight atop a ghostly white horse.

With great force, this terrifying creature gets rid of the living it encounters along its path, without the slightest apprehension. One of the most surprising elements in Cecily Brown 's canvas is the symbol of the cross that formally divides the painting into four panels, thus recalling the Palermo fresco of 6 meters by 6.40, detached from the courtyard of the Sclafani palace after the damage caused by the bombings. in 1944, and divided into four panels to be restored, before being transferred to Palazzo Abatellis. Unfortunately, the cut made the margins fragile and deteriorated over time. Cecily Brown brilliantly integrates this scar into her work and conceptually ties it to contemporary concerns such as destruction, recovery and reconstitution.
