The show

Pirelli HangarBicocca presents the “ Sunshine State ” exhibition from 31 March to 31 July 2022 , dedicated to Steve McQueen , Turner Prize and Academy Award winning artist and film-maker. The exhibition project, which develops in the space of the Navate and on one of the external walls, collects some of the most important works of McQueen's career and includes the new video installation, Sunshine State . In his mind for more than twenty years, the work was commissioned by the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2022 and premiered in Pirelli HangarBicocca.

Curated by Vicente Todolí, the exhibition is organized in collaboration with Tate Modern, London, where in 2020 a first version was presented by Clara Kim, The Daskalopoulous Senior Curator, International Art and Fiontan Moran, Assistant Curator, International Art. " Sunshine State ”is an immersive experience in the visual language of the artist who has always pursued the goal of understanding and penetrating reality and the deeper meaning of existence. The works on display - six filmic works and a sculpture - among the most relevant in McQueen's career, represent free narrative models and unexpected points of view on the broadest and most transversal nuances of historical and contemporary social contexts.

In over twenty-five years of career Steve McQueen has created some of the most significant works in the field of visual arts, using the film medium as a sculptural form in motion in space and time. In the artist's work, the language of visual arts and cinema feed and influence each other, thematically intersecting around current and urgent issues, such as racial and post-colonial issues. Starting precisely from the experience and oppression of black and racialized communities, McQueen opens up to a broader reflection on the human being and identity. In the more experimental films, the artist poetically imprints his gaze and his presence on the subjects represented, highlighting the close link between corporeality and subjectivity, between reality and its representation.
