ICA Milan - Contemporary Art Institute presents "Vicino al Cuore", the first solo exhibition in an Italian institution dedicated to Simone Forti (Florence, 1935), choreographer, dancer and Italian-American visual artist. The exhibition will bring the attention of critics and the public to the poetry of Simone Forti, a key figure in the development of performance from the end of the Fifties to the present.
The exhibition is curated by Chiara Nuzzi and Alberto Salvadori and will be open to the public free of charge from Friday 29 November 2019 to Sunday 2 February 2020.
The most significant phases of Simone Forti's artistic research from the Sixties to the present are contextualised in the exhibition, collecting a selection of historical and unpublished works - including drawings, watercolors, installations, videos of documentation and performances - closely linked to the biography of the artist.
The tireless artistic research of Simone Forti goes beyond the boundaries of the performance itself thanks to a practice in continuous dialogue between improvisation and experimentation that well represents the ethical, philosophical and intellectual reflection proposed by ICA Milan linked to the theme of the living, fil rouge that accompanies the entire programming of the institution under the artistic direction of Alberto Salbvadori.
Simultaneously with the Simone Forti exhibition, in the ICA Milan project room, When the Towel Drops, Vol 1 | Italy, video installation by Radha May collective, composed by Elisa Giardina Papa, Nupur Mathure Bathsheba Okwenje, will be presented in collaboration with the Il Lazzaretto Foundation.
The installation, curated by Claudia D'Alonzo, is a reflection on the issues of censorship and femininity in Italian post-war cinema and brings to light hundreds of archival documents and scenes from Italian and foreign films of the fifties and sixties.
