The show

Marc Chagall. A story of two worlds at the MUDEC Museo delle Culture in Milan , presents an exhibition project dedicated in particular to the graphic works of Chagall and his activity as an editorial illustrator .

Born almost 140 years ago, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is today one of the most popular and beloved modern artists as well as his work, which continues to attract interest around the world. Marc Chagall 's biography is intertwined with the crucial events of twentieth century Europe : from urbanization and secularization to the Russian Revolution, from the two world wars to the forced migration of millions of people. His masterpieces are recognized by an extremely heterogeneous audience because they have now entered the collective world memory.

Marc Chagall. A story of two worlds retraces some fundamental themes of the artist's life and production : from the roots in his native Vitebsk (now Belarus), described with love and nostalgia in the Ma vie series, to the meeting with his beloved wife Bella Rosenfeld , of the which illustrated the books Burning Lights and First Encounter.

The latter are dedicated to the memories of Bella's life in the Jewish community and were published after the woman's untimely death: her original drawings are on display.

Marc Chagall. A story of two worlds also showcases a series of etchings dedicated to The Dead Souls of Gogol ' that the French publisher Ambroise Vollard commissioned from the artist in 1923 and a series of works subsequently created by Chagall for the illustrated edition of the Fables by La Fontaine and The Bible.

The exhibition project conceived for Marc Chagall a story of two worlds connects these works with the cultural context from which they were born: the language, religious customs and social conventions of the Yiddish Jewish community, as well as the colors and shapes that Chagall assimilated as a child and best expressed as an adult, the relationship existing in Chagall 's work between art and literature and between language and content.
