Description

New Kingdom, Dynasty XX, reign of Ramesses III (1187a. C. - 1157 BC), Deir el-Medina. The papyrus is the first document on a strike in history. Written by the scribe Amennakht reports the news of protests that took place during the reign of Ramesses III in Deir el-Medina. The workers protest because they do not receive food rations, payment for their work in the Valley of the Kings. Despite various attempts at conciliation, the protest lasts for several days. The workers motivate their gesture as follows: "If we have reached this point it is the fault of hunger and thirst ... Write to our perfect pharaoh about our words, write to the vizier, our superior, so that we may be given provisions".
